GIA participated in the III Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Protected Areas, on October 13-17, 2019 in Lima, Peru, organizing a side event entitled: Dialogue of Experiences: Infrastructure and Governance in Mosaics of Protected Natural Areas and Indigenous Territories in the Amazon.
The event opened with a presentation on the concept, goals and initial activities of the GIA Community of Practice and Learning, which highlighted the extent and location of infrastructure concerns related to protected areas in the Amazon.
This was followed by a panel discussion with selected members of the GIA community of practice, who presented experiences related to multi-stakeholder dialogue, empowerment and mobilization by indigenous communities, and production and dissemination of scientific knowledge to the public and decision-makers. Discussion focused on the effectiveness of the tools and strategies, and enabling factors and limiting conditions for good governance of protected areas in the context of infrastructure.
