GIA Project Newsletter
We invite you to get informed about the Governance and Infrastructure in the Amazon (GIA) network through this newsletter. GIA is led by the University of Florida Tropical Conservation and Development Program and aims to create, strengthen and expand a Community of Practice and Learning (CoP-L) for exchanges of experiences and reflection on the use of tools and strategies for infrastructure governance by conservation and development practitioners in the Amazon.

COVID-19 and the Amazon
Participants in the mosaic virtual meetings identified several “hot topics” that are affecting their work and could be the subject of future webinars. In particular, there were calls for opportunities to discuss and reflect on the implications of COVID19 on Amazonian populations. We will announce these events as our planning progresses.

Future GIA-related research
Research on the effectiveness of conservation strategies for infrastructure governance: a comparative analysis of case studies across Amazonian countries (Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil)
GIA is planning more detailed research to build on our preliminary assessment. Postdoctoral Researcher Jazmin Gonzales Tovar will coordinate a comparative analysis of case studies across Amazonian countries (Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil) to assess the effectiveness of conservation strategies to promote infrastructure governance. We see this research as a collaboration with the GIA Community of Practice partners. A special focus will be given to the role of the historical context and power relations, as well as to networks and coalitions among actors and synergies among diverse types of strategies.

They are taking advantage of the quarantine to burn the Amazon
According to the Sinchi Institute, during March of this year 12,958 hotspots were registered in the Colombian Amazon, a figure that in the same period of 2019 was just 4,691. The Corporation for Sustainable Development of the Southern Amazon (Corpoamazonia), responsible for monitoring the natural resources of the Departments of Amazonas, Caquetá and Putumayo, says that deforestation mafias are taking advantage of the measures of containment by the coronavirus to burn and knock down more forest.
